About Justin Farr, LMT

Justin Farr, Licensed Massage Therapist

In 2012 I had good intentions for a simple temporary job while I figured out what I wanted to do in life, so I decided to enroll in Arbor College of Massage in Knoxville, TN. In 2013 I graduated with a better understanding of the human body and mind along with all its complexities, an eagerness to learn more about holistic therapeutic care, and a career I am passionate about.

Over 12 years and more than 14,000 hours later serving the East Tennessee community, I am continuously deeply grateful for the opportunity to help people feel better, move more, and live a higher quality life. I just love what massage does for people! Over a decade in, I am still consistently amazed by what skilled, intentional touch can do.

As a client-centered, evidence-based Licensed Massage Therapist, my focus is on listening to and understanding your goals and experiences in order to provide an elevated massage experience that is personally and uniquely crafted just for you. I combine the art and science of touch into work you can feel long after you leave. My approach is grounded in modern pain science and a collaborative framework where I think about your whole picture, not just the spot that hurts.

I'm a learner at heart and I love to deep dive into the science of how and why things work so that I can better understand what's actually happening in your body and what to do about it. Pain, tension, and recovery are shaped by your nervous system, your stress levels, your history, and what your body is dealing with right now. I adjust my approach based on all of that, just for you, every time.

My career, however, took a turn at the end of 2025...

Common Questions

Barefoot massage, also commonly called ashiatsu (Japanese for "foot pressure"), is therapeutic bodywork where the massage therapist uses their feet instead of their hands to deliver deep, broad, compressive pressure. Using gravity and modulated body weight rather than arm and hand strength, the therapist can create deep, even coverage across large muscle groups. The depth rivals or exceeds traditional deep tissue work, but because the pressure is distributed across a wider surface, it feels smoother and less intense at the point of contact. People have been consistently surprised by how good it feels!
The pressure feels larger and more immersive rather than concentrated. It's wide and steady across large areas of your body rather than focused on a single point. It feels like the tension is being pressed out of you in slow, even waves. People who love deep pressure tend to love this immediately. People who are nervous about it are usually surprised by how good it feels within the first few minutes. Your session takes place on a thick, heated, comfortable floor mat. I'll check in with you about pressure and comfort throughout the session, and your feedback is always appreciated so I can adjust in real time based on what you need.
Not necessarily. More pressure isn't automatically more effective, and the old idea that it has to hurt to help doesn't hold up. The best pressure is the one your body actually responds to, which is usually firm and satisfying but rarely the most intense thing you can stand. When pressure tips over into real pain, the body tends to brace and guard against it, which works against the very relaxation we're going for. A lot of what makes massage effective comes from your nervous system settling and feeling safe, not from forcing tissue to "release." Deep, broad pressure feels great and does real work, which is exactly what barefoot massage is built for. But depth is a tool, not the point. The point is the pressure that leaves you feeling better, and we find that together as we go.
Arrive in whatever you're comfortable in, and once you're on the mat or table you choose how much to undress (your comfort level) following the same protocol as a traditional table massage. Draping follows Tennessee state law at all times and ensures you are comfortable at all times. Generally, less clothing means I can work more effectively, especially through the hips and low back where a lot of people carry deep tension. It's important to know your comfort and sense of safety always come first.
Never. Every session has 15 minutes built in just for you, beyond your hands-on time, for a real conversation about what your body needs before we begin and an unhurried check-in after. And when your massage ends, take your time coming back: stretch, move a little, get up slowly, and notice what feels different. A chair is nearby if you'd like help up from the mat. Nothing about your time here is rushed, including you.
Of course. Just like my hands, I keep my feet soft and well-maintained for use as a professional therapeutic tool, and I wash and sanitize them before and after every session. Additionally for your comfort I wear clean warming socks between sessions.
Yes. During barefoot sessions I use my hands for lotion application and soothing contact strokes, and the 30-minute Classic add-on brings real hands-on work into the same session: deep barefoot compression for the full body plus detailed work with my hands and forearms. And if hands-on is what you love, full Classic Massage on the table is always on the menu.
Barefoot massage is excellent for chronic pain, back and hip tension, shoulder tightness, athletes, runners, anyone who craves deep pressure, and anyone who finds traditional deep tissue too concentrated or uncomfortable. It is not appropriate for people who are pregnant, anyone with breast or gluteal implants, anyone who has had recent surgery, or anyone with osteoporosis, heart conditions, pacemakers, blood clotting disorders, or who is currently undergoing radiation therapy. If you're unsure, just reach out and ask. I'm happy to talk through whether it's a good fit.
In late 2025 I rescued a starving puppy off the side of a country road. A few weeks later he got spooked on the leash and pulled me down hard, and I broke and dislocated my shoulder. On New Year's Eve I had a major open reconstruction to put everything back together. While I rebuilt, I kept asking one question: if I couldn't rely on my arms the way I used to, how else could I deliver the deep, skilled work my clients count on? The answer was ashiatsu. I'm fully healed now, the dog is a very good boy, and barefoot massage turned out to be one of the best things that has ever happened to my practice. What started as an adaptation is now a permanent part of how I work. :)
